At UMi, we're passionate about helping businesses access the support they need to grow with confidence. In this edition of Under the Spotlight, we're getting to know James Ramsey, one of our Business Funding Advisers within the UMi Get Funding team.
What is your role at UMi?
I'm a Business Funding Adviser, helping SMEs find the right mix of financial products to support their growth and achieve their business ambitions.
Tell us about your career to date
I've worked in financial services for more than 20 years. I started my career with HSBC in retail banking before moving into commercial relationship management. I then spent 10 years in residential mortgage lending before returning to the commercial and bridging finance sector a few years ago.
Over the years, I've held both customer-facing and operational roles, giving me a broad understanding of the financial services landscape. What I've always enjoyed most is working directly with people, understanding their goals and helping them find solutions that meet their needs. That's what makes my role at UMi so rewarding.
What does your current role involve?
My role involves working with businesses across the region to understand their funding requirements and help them access the finance they need.
By working with a wide range of lenders on our panel, I can help businesses identify the most suitable funding solutions for their circumstances. It's not just about finding finance for a single transaction. It's about building long-term relationships, providing ongoing support and helping businesses achieve their ambitions over time.
What makes UMi Get Funding different?
UMi Get Funding is unlike any organisation I've encountered before. The breadth of support available to businesses is extensive, with experienced colleagues bringing expertise from across a wide range of specialisms.
What stands out most is the genuine commitment to helping businesses succeed. The focus is on making a difference, not simply completing the next deal.
UMi also places real value on building long-term relationships. We've invested in the people, systems and infrastructure needed to support businesses throughout their growth journey, ensuring that as we grow, our clients grow with us.
What do you enjoy outside of work?
I love live music and try to see as many bands as possible. It's one of my favourite ways to spend my free time.
I'm also an avid sports fan, particularly when it comes to football, rugby and ice hockey. These days, I'll happily watch rather than play, as my body has decided it's perhaps not quite as resilient as it once was.
I also have two rescue dogs who take up a lot of my time. Like most worthwhile things in life, they can be hard work at times, but they're incredibly rewarding.
And finally, tell us one interesting fact about yourself
This is always the difficult question!
I have more tattoos than I can count, although you'd probably never guess that if you met me.
